Though it is not diseases but a serious skin challenge that needs to be dealt with because it can cause cracks and fissures that invite infections and inflammation.

So many of my readers had been mailing me with many questions regarding to their skin conditions especially those of them with dry skin and one of the question is, is moisturizers really necessary for Dry Skin?

Today, I will be discussing skin moisturizers and the necessity of moisturizer to dry skin and extremely dry skin. But before that, let’s understand what moisturizer is and its content.

What is Skin Moisturizer?

Skin moisturizer is any cream, lotion, oil or butter that you apply on your skin to help prevent water loss on the outer layer of your skin so that it does not dry quickly causing your itching and patches.

Normally your skin on its own secretes what is called sebum, which keeps your skin hydrated naturally but when you don’t have it enough on your skin thus external moisturizers become an alternative to keeping your body skin moisturized and hydrated.

Is Moisturizer Really Necessary For Dry Skin?

Every skin moisturizer whether organic, natural and non-organic has primary ingredients in them that give them the power or ability to moisturize and hydrate your skin for a long time even after a bath, so this will really help your skin stay smooth and nourished without damages.

Below are the three main ingredients every skin moisturizer contains without these ingredients there will be nothing like moisturizers:

1. Occlusives

The function of this ingredient is to hold water after the moisturizer has been applied on your skin. Such ingredients you will find them written as petrolatum, Lanolin, cetyl alcohol, Lecithin etc.

2. Humectants

These ingredients sponge up water, drawing it up from the dermis and, to a limited extent, in the humid conditions from the air. Humectants are used together with occlusives in all skin moisturizer to be effective, using only humectants may trigger drier skin and such ingredients you will see them written as glycerin, honey, panthenol, sorbitol urea, etc.

3. Emollients

This ingredient does not actually moisturize your skin as the case may be but helps your skin to look smooth and subtle by filling in the rough spots and making your skin feel smooth without affecting the water content. An occlusive known as dimethicone can do that work also. Then most humectants ingredients and alcohol like octyl dodecanol do emollients work perfectly without interruption.

Therefore, moisturizer is really necessary for all skin types but very necessary for all those with dry skin and very dry skin. Always check moisturizers ingredients when buying your creams, lotions and butters and make sure it really moisturizes before paying.

However, between skin moisturizers like body creams, body lotions and body butters, I always advice my reader with dry skin and very dry skin to always buy body butters because they are the best skin moisturizers for them.

Body butters have natural occlusive and sunscreen protection ingredients in them such as shea butter, mango butter, cocoa butter, olives butter etc. though you may complain that body butters are greasy, but no, nowadays arrowroot powder is included in body butters to cut their greasy nature. So they are as less greasy as any other moisturizer out there.

But if you have a normal skin type or oil skin, then your body creams and lotions moisturizer is good for you.
